TU Posts 5-2 Upset Win Over No. 30 Rice

HOUSTON - The No. 31-ranked University of Tulsa women's tennis team upset No. 30 Rice 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The Golden Hurricane (15-3, 3-0 C-USA) won its fifth-straight match overall and its 14th in a row against league opponents. The Owls (12-6, 1-1 C-USA) dropped only their third match at home this season. Rice opened doubles play with a triumph on the top court after No. 35 Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath topped the No. 69-ranked senior duo of Ewa Szatkowska and Anastasia Erofeeva. Tulsa evened doubles play on the second court when senior Bonny Davidson and sophomore Samantha Vickers defeated Ana Guzman and Katie Gater 8-2. The Golden Hurricane secured the opening point of the match when junior Michelle Farley and sophomore Maria Sant'Anna topped Leah Fried and Kimberly Anicete 8-4 at the third position. Tulsa jumped ahead 2-0 after Davidson won her singles match 7-5, 6-0 over Fried on the sixth court. Beazant, ranked No. 44 in the nation, put the home team on the board after she got past No. 83 Erofeeva 6-3, 6-3 at the top of the order. Freshman Isaura Enrique pushed Tulsa ahead 3-1 by defeating Guzman 6-3, 6-1 at the fourth position, but the home team once again added to its score when Anicete defeated Farley 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 at the fifth flight. Tulsa capped off its victory by winning the final two matches in third sets. Szatkowska topped Gater 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 on the third court, while No. 75 Vickers ended proceedings with a 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 1-0 (10-7) win over Harmath at the second position.
