No. 19 Women's Tennis Defeats Middle Tennessee in Quarterfinals of C-USA Championships

After splitting the singles matches at three, No. 1 seed University of Tulsa women's tennis team defeated No. 9 seed Middle Tennessee 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championships at Folkes Stevens Tennis Center on Friday to advance to the semifinals to face No. 4 seed Marshall on Saturday at 11 a.m.

NORFOLK, Va. - After splitting the singles matches at three, No. 1 seed University of Tulsa women's tennis team defeated No. 9 seed Middle Tennessee 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championships at Folkes Stevens Tennis Center on Friday to advance to the semifinals to face No. 4 seed Marshall on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The match was played indoors due to cold temperatures and four singles matches were played first before the final two singles matches could play.

Freshman Marcelina Cichon gave No. 19 Tulsa (16-4) a 1-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 4 singles position and freshman Rongrong Leenabanchong's 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to give the Golden Hurricane a 2-0 lead.

Cichon's win was her 29th of her season, which is tied for the 10th most in school history in a single season and the fourth most in school history by a freshman.

Middle Tennessee (10-10) won at the No. 2 and No. 1 singles position to tie the match at two, but Tulsa gained the lead again after senior Maria Sant'Anna 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles position for a 3-2 lead.

MTSU tied the match at three after a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win at the No. 5 singles position to force the playing of the doubles point.

MSTU won the first doubles match with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles position, but the Golden Hurricane tied the doubles point after a win from Sant'Anna and sophomore Saana Saarteinen 8-4 at the No. 3 doubles position.

The Golden Hurricane clinched the doubles point with Leenabanchong and sophomore Carol Benito's 8-6 win at the No. 2 doubles position.

The Hurricane has won the doubles point in 16 of 20 matches this season.
