NORFOLK, Va. - No. 1 seed University of Tulsa women's tennis team defeated No. 4 seed Marshall 4-2 in the semifinals of the Conference USA Championships at Folkes Stevens Tennis Center on Saturday to advance to the championship to face No. 2 seed Rice on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The match once again was play indoors due to cold temperatures as four singles matches were played first before the final two singles matches could play.

Freshman Rongrong Leenabanchong won the first singles match to give Tulsa a 1-0 lead after a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 3 singles position, but Marshall tied the match at one after a win at the No. 2 singles position.

Marshall won at the No. 1 singles position to take a 2-1 lead, but the Golden Hurricane tied the match at two after freshman Marcelina Cichon's 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 4 singles position.

Cichon's win was her 30th of the season, which is tied for the ninth most in school history in a single season. The Skarzusko-Kamienna, Poland native needs one win to tie for fifth most and to tie for second most by a freshman.

Senior Maria Sant'Anna gave Tulsa a 3-2 lead after a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles position and sophomore Saana Saarteinen clinched the match for the Golden Hurricane after a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win at the No. 5 singles position.

With Tulsa scoring the fourth point in singles, the doubles point was not played.

Tulsa faces No. 29 Rice for the championship for the third time in a row. Both squads have won the championship with the Owls winning it last season and the Golden Hurricane winning it the season before in 2012.

The Golden Hurricane has played in seventh championships in eight seasons as a member of the C-USA and has won five championships.

Tulsa continues its perfect record as the No. 1 seed with a 14-0 record in tournament play. Tulsa has posted a 22-3 (.880) overall tournament record and has won 13 of the last 14 tournament matches.
