Vickers Rolls Into Championship Match at Regionals
Oct. 23, 2011
TULSA, Okla. - Sophomore Sam Vickers won both her singles matches Sunday to advance to the championship of the 2011 USTA/ITA Central Region Championship at Case Tennis Center.
Vickers will face Sonja Molnar of Iowa at 9 a.m. Monday morning. Molnar, the second seed in the tournament, has not dropped a set in the tournament and is ranked No. 65 in the country.
The winner of the match will earn an automatic bid into the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Vickers is looking to become the fourth player in Tulsa history to claim the Central Region Championship (Anousjka van Exel, 1998 - Aleksandra Durska, 2001 - Alicia Pillay, 2002).
Vickers, seeded fourth and ranked No. 89 in the NCAA, started her day with a huge come-from-behind victory over Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska.
The sophomore member of the Golden Hurricane women's tennis team dropped her first set of the tournament, but she rebounded with two dominating sets to capture the quarterfinal match 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Weatherholt is unranked currently after sitting out last year with an injury, but the Husker reached a career-high rank of No. 52 in the nation on Sept. 10, 2010.
Vickers cruised in her semifinal match with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Nebraska's Patricia Veresova.
Molnar took down senior Anastasia Erofeeva in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2.
Erofeeva also lost in the doubles semifinals with senior teammate Ewa Szatkowska. The tandem was defeated 8-5 at the hands of Oklahoma State's Meghan Blevins and Mary Jeremiah.
Sophomore Maria Sant'Anna has had a great run in the consolation bracket, as she will play in the singles consolation championship Monday morning after advancing Sunday.
She defeated Veronika Blaskova of Wichita State 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) in the quarterfinals, and moved into the championship match after Jeremiah defaulted in the semifinals.
Junior Michelle Farley advanced to the semifinals on the top half of the draw after taking down Valerie Brockman of Wichita State 6-3, 6-2. Farley's run ended after she fell to Peta Maree Lancaster of Oklahoma 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2).
Lancaster will meet Sant'Anna at 9:45 a.m. Monday morning.
