Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's and women's tennis teams will open the 2001 spring season this weekend at the Tulsa Southern Tennis Club. The 43rd-ranked TU men's team hosts Oral Roberts this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and then returns to the court at 6:30 p.m. to face the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners. On Sunday, Jan. 28, the 25th-ranked Hurricane women's team hosts Southwest Missouri State at 10:00 a.m. and follows with Oral Roberts at 4:00 p.m.

The Tulsa men returns eight letterwinners for the 2001 season. Junior Dane McGregor returns to lead the Hurricane attack. Last season, McGregor recorded a team-high 19 singles wins and tied for the lead in doubles victories with 13. Other returners include senior Micah Zomer, juniors Mike Nammar, Pawel Sebastyanski and Shriranga Sudhakara along with sophomore Steve Timperley. Three newcomers will don a TU uniform for the first time including sophomore Robby Merrick and the freshmen duo of Ryan Moore and Alejandro Tejerina

TU Men's coach Vince Westbrook begins his 10th season at Tulsa, just two wins shy of becoming the all-time winningest coach in TU history. Westbrook has a career mark of 119-101. The current record for most wins by a TU head coach is 120 by Don Zimmerman (1970-77).

The TU women return five letterwinners for the 2001 spring season including senior Jennifer DeSpain, the school's all-time winningest singles player, juniors Jana Sedivec and Bianca Posada along with sophomores Aleksandra Durska and Marjolein van Dongen. Tulsa welcomes two newcomers to the team this season. Freshmen Mariana Barrios and Zoe Buhagiar don a TU uniform for the first time on Sunday.

Tulsa women's coach Paige McMurray begins her third season at the helm of the Hurricane. She begins the season with a 33-14 (.702) overall record.
