IRVING, Texas - For the second week in a row, the University of Tulsa men's and women's tennis teams swept the Conference USA weekly award this spring season as Clifford Marsland and Marcelina Cichon were named C-USA Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week respectively, announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior men's tennis player Marsland earned his sixth career weekly award, the first this season, as he won two singles matches at the No. 2 position and won one doubles match at the No. 1 position.

Freshman women's tennis player Cichon earned her first career weekly award as she recorded two wins at the No. 6 singles position.

Marsland defeated No. 60 Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech 6-3, 6-5 (4) on Sunday to give TU a 3-2 lead. The Perth, Australia native also defeated Konrad Ziebra of Northwestern 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday at the International Tennis Association Kick-off Weekend. Marsland is 3-0 in singles play in 2014.

Marsland partnered up with sophomore Dylan McCloskey to defeated No. 23 Virginia Tech's doubles team of Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for the Golden Hurricane.

The Golden Hurricane duo is 4-0 in doubles play in 2014 and has recorded two wins against a ranked doubles opponent.

Cichon defeated Amber Li of Yale 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday and Sansitha Nandakumar of Virginia Tech 6-4, 6-1 to give TU a 3-1 lead on Sunday at the ITA Kick-off Weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Golden Hurricane has won all four Conference USA Tennis Athlete of the Week this season as Japie De Klerk and Samantha Vickers were named C-USA Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week respectively on Jan. 21.

 

 

The men's tennis team starts a three-match homestand with No. 12 Pepperdine on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, followed by No. 36 Washington on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and No. 6 Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The women's tennis team continues its five-match roadstand traveling to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. on Friday.
