TU Women's Tennis Players Dominate UH Fall Classic
Oct. 24, 2000 Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's tennis team won two of five singles flights and one of two doubles flights to dominate the UH Fall Classic in Houston, Texas. Tulsa senior Jennifer DeSpain, the schools all-time winningest singles player, added to her win total with three straight victories en rout to the Flight #1 singles title. DeSpain got past Texas Tech's Alenka Ovin, 6-4, 7-6 (2), to claim the division championship. In the Flight #3 singles, sophomore Marjolein van Dongen also won three straight decisions to earn her division title. Van Dongen topped Eva Soderkvist of Texas-San Antonio in the championship match, 6-4, 6-1. Tulsa freshman Mariana Barrios won two of three singles matches, but fell in the Flight #4 title match, 6-3, 6-4, to Sonnia Orellana of Texas Tech. In doubles play, the Tulsa duo of DeSpain and junior Jana Sedivec won three matches to secure the Flight #1 doubles championship.
