POST MATCH QUOTES
Northwestern Coach Claire Pollard
Your thoughts about the match...
"We expected a battle from Fresno State. We played them early on in the year. They're an outstanding team and really well coached. I wasn't surprised that it was a battle out there. I think it was a big bonus for us that we got the doubles point. We didn't get it against them the first time, and I think that helped us a little bit today.
Is there any added pressure on your team coming into this tournament as the No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked team?
"No. I don't think so. When you reach the round of 16, every team is really good. I think that we're deserving of the No. 1 seed and the No. 1 ranking right now, but I don't think it mean's a whole lot at this point. There's a ton of good teams and a ton of parity in college tennis right now that makes it really exited. The better team is going to win every day, regardless of the number by the side of the team name
Northwestern Player Maria Mosolova
Talk about your singles match...
"It was a great first match for me. I think Fresno State played their best game. I think there was a lot of great preparation for the matches in these championships."
Fresno State Head Coach Simon Thibodeau
On the match...
"We knew we were going to play the toughest team, but we were ready. We had played them at the indoor and we gave them a tough match. I think we could have done a little bit better in doubles; that has been our strength for the past couple of years. When we play teams like Northwestern we have to do a little bit better in doubles, and I think that shows in singles that we are all there, battling really hard on each court. We had a chance, but we came up short. Credit to Northwestern they have been playing really well all year; they were the better team today. We have a lot to look forward too. We have all but one coming back next year."
On the good season...
"Last year we had the same team, they reached the round of 16 as well. We felt we had a good shot at Northwestern, but we came up short. We didn't get the best season, but it was a good season. We look forward to next year."
