Aug. 31, 2007
Stetson Box Score | Campbell Box Score
Charleston, S. C. - The University of Tulsa stretched its winning streak to four matches with two wins on Friday at the CSU Invitational in Charleston, S.C. TU swept Stetson, 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-18), in the day's first contest. The Golden Hurricane also swept Campbell, 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 31-29), later in the day. Freshman Emma Ridley and senior Fabiola Nepomuceno combined to lead the Hurricane with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior Julia Silva narrowly missed another triple-double again with 33 assists, 10 digs and nine kills. Junior Malorey Grove also added 24 digs for the Hurricane. Tulsa actually had to overcome early deficits in all three games. In the first game, TU watched a modest 6-5 lead balloon to a 19-10 lead. Stetson scored five of the next six points in attempt to close the gap at 20-15. However, TU pulled away by scoring the 10 of the final 14 tallies. TU erased a 10-7 deficit in the second stanza with a 6-0 run with the help of a pair kills from both Ridley and fellow freshman Nicole Boyle. After Stetson tied the third game at 11-11 on a service ace, the Hurricane closed out the match with a 19-7 run for the victory. In the second match of the day, an early battle turned into a blow out. After Campbell tied the game at 4-4, Tulsa doubled up the Camels with a 26-13 run, including a 7-0 run with Boyle at the service line. Boyle accounted for eight more points at the service line in the second game, including a pair of service aces. Coach Ed Allen called his first timeout of the day with the Hurricane down 22-14 in the third game. A Camel service error gave TU a sideout, Grove responded with four more points at the serve line to close the game to 22-19. Campbell seemed to right the ship and force a fourth game, taking a 26-21 lead. However, six consecutive attack errors, one thanks to a TU block, allowed the Hurricane to tie the game at 26-26 before a CU timeout stopped the run.
The Hurricane scored the final three points of the game after falling behind 29-28, on a pair of kills from Ridley and a solo block by Boyle. The victory improved TU's record to 4-2 on the season, while Campbell fell to 4-3 on the year. Tulsa will face North Carolina Central at 12 noon on Saturday before facing host Charleston Southern at 7 p.m. to conclude the festivities. Invitational |
