Dayton, Ohio - The University of Tulsa volleyball team dropped its season opener 3-1 (23-25, 24-26, 25-21, 21-25) against No. 22 Dayton in the Frericks Center in Dayton, Ohio in the Dayton Invitational.

Tulsa had two players that recorded double-doubles. Junior transfer Valerie El Houssineled the team with 15 kills and had a match-high 21 digs in her first career match with Tulsa.  Senior Kellie Culbertson recorded her 34th career double-double. The Long Beach, Calif., native had 11 kills and 14 digs.

"Dayton is ranked No. 22 and to push them like we did on their floor makes me feel good about our effort," TU head coach Steven McRobertssaid. "We made too many errors, but the errors we made are very correctable. We will definitely learn from this and get better."

Junior setter Bailey Clampitt had 22 assists, while freshman setter Genesis Vierahad 21 assists.  Freshman libero Brooke Berryhillwas tied for second on the team with 14 digs.

Overall, the Golden Hurricane led Dayton in kills, assists and digs. TU had 55 kills, 53 assists and 65 digs, while UD had 50 kills, 46 assists and 56 digs. Tulsa tied Dayton in service aces with six.

The Flyers (1-0) were led by Megan Campbell with 15 kills, Jenna Jendryk with 37 assists and Jenna Krafka with 14 digs. Alaina Turner and Aubreigh Applegate had 11 digs each.

Most of the first set was back-and-forth between the two teams. With the scored tied at 14, UD took the lead outscoring TU 6-2. Tulsa could not recapture the lead and the Flyers took the first set.

With the Hurricane down 13-11 in the second set, TU scored the next six points to take the lead 16-13. The Flyers came back to tie the set at 24 and scored the final two points to win the set.

The Golden Hurricane led most of the way in the third set. With the score tied at six, the Hurricane outscored UD 14-8 to take the lead. The Flyers tried to claw back at the end of the set, down 23-21, but TU scored the next two points to win the set.

In the fourth set, TU took an early lead 7-3, but the Flyers scored five unanswered points to take the lead by a point. With the score tied at 10, UD went on another run, 7-1 to take the lead once more. TU would come back to within a point, 19-18, but UD outscored TU 6-3 to win the set.

TU continues play in the Dayton Invitational Saturday with two matches against Missouri State at 9 a.m. and then Northeastern at 4:30 p.m.

The Golden Hurricane begins the 2013 home campaign on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in Donald W. Reynolds Center.
