SAN FRANCISCO - The University of Tulsa volleyball team swept Washington State, 25-12, 25-16, 25-15, Friday evening to open the Powerade/Asics Challenge at San Francisco's War Memorial Gym.
As a team, the Golden Hurricane (2-2) hit .430 (46-9-86) with 46 kills, 44 assists, seven service aces, 40 digs and 5.0 blocks. The Cougars hit .103 (23-14-87) with 23 kills, 22 assists, one ace, 25 digs and 3.0 blocks.
Tyler Henderson had 20 kills against just two errors, hitting .500, with eight digs, while Kelsey Hancock had 12 kills and hit .529 and Hannah Stout had five kills and hit .500. Jordan Clampitt tallied 41 assists, and Jessica Adams and Diana Silva each recorded 11 digs.
"We were really excited about the ball control in all aspects of the game, as well as our defense and transition attacking," Tulsa head coach Ed Allen said. "We were able to apply consistent pressure all night. That was one of the best blocking efforts we have put up, and against a team that really physically outsized us.
"We feel our kids are starting to get their legs under them and are starting to play well after three pretty intense weeks of practice."
The Golden Hurricane returns to the court Saturday at 2 p.m. against San Francisco and at 7 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara to wrap up the Powerade/Asics Challenge.
