Tulsa Falls to Oral Roberts 3-2 in Opening Match of ORU Classic

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team lost a hard-fought five set match Thursday night 3-2 to Oral Roberts in the opening match of the ORU Classic held at the Cooper Aerobic Center.
The Golden Hurricane dropped the first two sets to the host Golden Eagles 20-25 and 20-25 before winning the next two sets 25-21 and 25-20 to force a fifth set. The fifth set was close all the way, but Oral Roberts pulled away at the end to win the set 15-8.
TU was led by senior outside hitter Beth Hodge and junior outside hitter Jennifer Eichler who recorded 14 kills each, and Eichler hit with a .423 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Jessie Ayers scored a double-double, tallying 39 assists and 11 digs. The Hurricane hit .212 for the match, including .259 in the third set and .500 in the fourth set.
Coming off losses in the first two sets and their backs against the wall the Tulsa players came out of the break fired up and opened the set on a 13-3 run fueled by Beth Hodge serves. ORU came back to within 21-20 before TU pulled away for a 25-21 win.
The fourth set saw The Hurricane reach a 5-3 lead before the Golden Eagles tied the score at 5 apiece. TU pulled away to a 15-9 lead and held the rest of the way for the 25-20 victory. The fifth set carried on an even keel until the score was tied at 6-6, when Oral Roberts took the lead for good, going on a 9-2 run to end the match.
Tulsa returns to action Friday at 4 p.m. against North Texas on the second day of the ORU Classic. The Hurricane will wrap up the weekend Saturday afternoon at 4:00 against Fordham. For all Golden Hurricane news and information, visit www.TulsaHurricane.com.
