Volleyball Takes Out Cal Poly, 3-1

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Three players hit double-figure kills, and three players had double-digit digs to lead the Tulsa volleyball team to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22) win over Cal Poly to open the Middle Tennessee Invitational Friday evening at Alumni Memorial Gym.
Junior Tyler Henderson led the Golden Hurricane (5-3) with 14 kills and a .303 hitting percentage with four blocks, while sophomore Kellie Culbertson and junior Diana Silva each had a double-double with 12 kills-14 digs, and 12 kills-13 digs, respectively. Silva hit .300 and served two aces.
Junior libero Jessica Adams led TU with 21 digs. Junior Jordan Clampitt and freshman Bailey Clampitt recorded 26 and 22 assists, respectively. Jordan Clampitt added seven digs and two aces, while the younger sister led the Hurricane with three aces and added four digs. Sophomore Miriele Gobbo totaled a career-high five blocks to lead Tulsa in a 7.0-total block effort.
TU hit .219 as a team (56-23-151) with 56 kills, 54 assists, nine service aces, 67 digs and 7.0 blocks. Cal Poly hit .204 (50-20-147) with 50 kills, 46 assists, two aces, 66 digs and 9.0 blocks.
After falling behind with a first-set loss, Tulsa rebounded with a dominant, 25-14, set two victory in which it hit .433 and converted on 80 percent of its side-out opportunities. The Golden Hurricane did not hit for as high a percentage in the final two frames, but the effort proved to be enough to earn the win.
TU picked up five of its blocks and 37 digs in the final two sets, while Culbertson tallied five kills, Henderson had seven, and senior Kelsey Hancock slammed seven of her eight kills over sets three and four.
The Golden Hurricane will play twice on Saturday, taking on host Middle Tennessee State Saturday at 11:30 a.m., and No. 4 Illinois at 7:30 p.m.
