Volleyball Squad Lets Guard Down at Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. - After winning the first two games of the match, the Golden Hurricane went into the break riding high. That confidence was lost somewhere in game three, however, as Fresno State collected a 10-15, 6-15, 15-13, 15-8 and 15-10 victory over the Golden Hurricane in Western Athletic Conference action.
The win puts Fresno State back at the .500 mark for the third time this season in overall play and conference action.
Fresno State hit .274 and netted 18 blocks with 62 digs while Tulsa hit .228 and had eight blocks and 70 digs.
Tulsa was led by senior outside hitter Kristien Van Lierop who had a match-high 19 kills. The Hurricane also had three players record double-doubles. Junior outside hitter Kara Hidinger had 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Tammy Leuer recorded 17 kills with 12 digs, while senior setter Shannon Smith logged a match-high 56 assists as well as a match-high 18 digs.
The Bulldogs had four players record double-digit kills while two had double-figure digs. Junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid notched a team-high 15 kills and a match-high eight blocks in the victory. Sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Closs and freshman outside hitter Stefanie Taelman each had 14 kills. Closs also added six blocks and Taelman had three. Sophomore Christy Burnett had 11 kills in the win.
Tulsa, now 15-5 overall and 1-5 in the WAC, will travel to San Jose State for a conference match on Saturday evening at 9 p.m. (CST). The Hurricane will then travel to Hawaii to face the Wahine on Monday evening.
