Volleyball Falls to Rice in WAC Action

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team had two players with double-digit kill performances and five players with double-digit dig performances on Saturday night. However, it was not enough as the Golden Hurricane fell to Rice, 3-1 (30-23, 26-30, 32-30, 30-20) in Western Athletic Conference Action at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in front of a crowd of 300 people.
Sophomore Vanessa Thon posted her 15th double-double of the season, a mark which leads the WAC. Thon recorded 49 assists and a team-high 22 digs to go alond with four kills, two blocks and two service aces. Fellow sophomores Patricia Marques and Dana Weddle posted 16 and 15 kills, respectively, to lead the Hurricane attack.
Rice used a 75-60 advantage in kills to hold a .208-.159 advantage in team hitting percentage. The Hurricane is 16-1 this season when it hits over .200 as a team. Tulsa's two service aces were the fewest of the season. The previous low was three, occuring twice, against Cornell and Hawai`i. TU continues to lead the WAC in aces with 193 on the season.
Tulsa will hit the road in the coming week, as the Hurricane continues conference play. On Thursday, TU travels to UTEP for an 8 p.m. match. On Friday, TU plays at Grambling State before driving seven miles on I-20 to face Louisiana Tech on Saturday. Both matches in the Cajun State are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
