Oct. 23, 2011
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Tyler Henderson tallied 13 kills and the Golden Hurricane hit .350 on its way to a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-13, 25-13) at East Carolina Sunday afternoon at Minges Coliseum.
Henderson hit .409 and three TU players recorded double-digit digs, led by Jessica Adams and Diana Silva, who had 14 apiece to lead the Golden Hurricane (19-5, 10-1, C-USA). Kelly Derby recorded nine kills to lead the Pirates (2-18, 0-11 C-USA).
Miriele Gobbo hit .636 with seven kills and no errors, while Carly Boatwright led the Hurricane with four blocks, and added six kills and four service aces. Kellie Culbertson contributed 10 digs with seven kills.
"We started the second half of conference play with a win, and we just want to build on it and keep getting victories," Tulsa Head Coach Steven McRoberts said. "We had a balanced attack. Our middles did a good job. Miri played really well, and Carly got a lot of points in a variety of ways. It is definitely a goal of ours to hit over .300 and hold our opponents under .100 hitting, and it was nice to see us do that. Early on, our passing wasn't great, but it got better as the match went on. When we're passing well and distributing the ball, we're playing really well."
Tulsa hit .350 as a team for the second straight match (46-11-100) with 46 kills, 43 assists, a season-high 10 service aces, 54 digs and 4.0 blocks. East Carolina hit .083 (21-13-96) with 21 kills, 18 assists, five aces, 41 digs and 5.0 blocks.
Tulsa hit .343 in the first set, led by Culbertson's four kills and Bailey Clampitt's nine assists. Boatwright served four aces and Adams tallied five digs. ECU hit .231 and served five aces in the set, which featured five ties and three lead changes.
The Golden Hurricane bounced back from a sluggish first set and dominated the second set, converting 78 percent of its sideout opportunities and holding the Pirates to a .029 attack percentage. Henderson tallied four kills, set up by Jordan Clampitt's seven assists, and Silva picked up 10 digs in the frame.
TU converted 84 percent of its sideouts in the third set, as Henderson hit .714 with six kills. Jordan Clampitt tallied 10 assists and lead the Hurricane to a .467 attack percentage in the frame. Culbertson and Adams had five and four digs, respectively as the Tulsa defense held ECU to .029 hitting.
The Golden Hurricane returns home next weekend to take on Memphis and UAB. TU plays Memphis Friday at 7 p.m. and UAB Sunday at 1 p.m.
