Hooper and Culbertson lead TU to a 3-0 sweep of LA Tech

TULSA, Okla. - Outside hitters Ashley Hooper and Kellie Culbertson recorded double-digit kills as the University of Tulsa volleyball team swept Louisiana Tech 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) on Friday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Hooper tied her season-high with 11 kills and had a season-high .529 hitting percentage. The sophomore has recorded 43 kills and is hitting .333 in her last five matches
Culbertson recorded a match-high 13 kills and had a .233 hitting percentage. The senior added nine digs and two service aces giving her 159 service aces. The Long Beach, Calif., native needs four service aces to set the school record.
With the score tied at four in the first set, the Golden Hurricane (19-4, 8-0 C-USA) scored seven of the next eight points to take a six-point lead, 11-5. Louisiana Tech (7-16, 1-7 C-USA) would tie the score at 18, but the Hurricane scored seven of the last nine points to take a 1-0 match lead. Culbertson led TU with seven kills and had a .312 hitting percentage, while Berryhill added 10 digs. TU converted 77 percent of its sideout opportunities and recorded 26 digs.
The Hurricane scored the first four points in the second frame, but Tech would tie the score at 11. With Culbertson serving, TU scored six straight points to take a 17-11 lead. The Golden Hurricane outscored the Lady Techsters 8-6 during the rest of the set to take a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. Hooper and Gobbo led TU with four kills each, while Hooper added a .500 hitting percentage and Gobbo added a .333 hitting percentage. Clampitt recorded nine assists and TU had 17 digs and held LA Tech to a .094 hitting percentage.
With Culbertson's serving to start the third stanza, TU score the first five points. The Lady Techsters would pull within four points, 15-11, but the Hurricane scored the next four points to increase its lead to eight, 19-11. The Golden Hurricane went on to win the set and the match. Hooper and Culbertson led TU with four kills each, while Hooper had a .800 hitting percentage and Culbertson had a .600 hitting percentage. TU had a .407 hitting percentage and converted 73 percent of its sideout opportunities.
The Hurricane recorded five service aces and has recorded 29 service aces in its last four matches.
LA Tech was led by Rebbecca Redgen and Xzache Mathis with nine kills each, Maria Coelho with 23 assists and Alejandra Aviles with 22 digs.
The Golden Hurricane hosts Southern Miss on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
