Tulsa Sweeps UAB 3-0 to Advance to C-USA Volleyball Championship
Nov. 17, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - Powered by the 2012 Conference USA Libero of the Year Jessica Adams, the Tulsa volleyball team swept UAB (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) to advance to the title match of the Conference USA Volleyball Championship at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Saturday, November 17.
Adams recorded 28 digs to lead the Hurricane defense, which accumulated 86 digs during the match. She also chipped in six assists.
"Jess had a tremendous game," commented Head Coach Steven McRoberts. "I was hoping she would get to 30 digs. She got to 28 but Jess has been so good for us all year, not only digging the ball but also passing the ball. I'm proud that she had the type of game that she did today because we needed it."
The Golden Hurricane (23-9) hit .173 in the match (46-20-150) while holding the Blazers (20-14) to a .112 clip (36-19-152). Tulsa recorded 45 assists compared to UAB's 36, while UAB outblocked TU 9-6.
Senior outside hitter Tyler Henderson led the TU attack with 17 kills and also tallied a team-leading three blocks in the match and added six digs.
Senior setter Jordan Clampitt collected her 12th double-double of the season with 26 assists and 14 digs. Fellow senior Diana Silva added six kills and 16 digs, while junior outside hitter Kellie Culbertson chipped in six kills and 12 digs.
Freshman middle blocker Ashley Hooper slammed home nine kills and hit .400.
In the first set, UAB took an 18-11 lead over the Hurricane. TU stormed back with a 14-3 run to take the match 25-21. Adams had eight digs in the frame, while the Tulsa defense held UAB to a .065 clip. The game consisted of nine ties and two lead changes.
Tulsa jumped out of the gates with a 5-0 lead in the second set to force UAB to take an early timeout. TU held an 18-8 advantage before UAB went on a run of its own to make it a 23-18 match. The Hurricane took the stanza 25-21 thanks to a set-clinching kill from Henderson.
Henderson led the way in the third frame with six kills, while Hooper had five kills as the Golden Hurricane took the set 25-20. UAB held a 20-18 lead, but Tulsa closed the set on a 7-0 run to claim the set and match on a block from Henderson.
"I'm just proud of the girls," McRoberts said. "I felt like we fought through what most people would term ugly volleyball at times; some high error times in our game, but it looks like we finished with 86 digs in three sets. That's by a season high for us in three sets."
The Golden Hurricane will face UCF tomorrow in a 1 p.m. tilt in the title match of the C-USA Championship. Fans that attended Tulsa's football victory against UCF on Saturday will receive free admission into tomorrow's contest. The match will also air on CBS Sports Network as Jason Knapp and Lindsey Berg on site to call the action.
