Conference USA Volleyball Championship Quotes

Nov. 18, 2012

Recap |  Box Score

Tulsa Head Coach Steven McRoberts

On winning the championship…

“Our team played so well today. We came out with a lot of poise and just set the tone at the net. Our blocking and our digging continued to be very good all weekend. Offensively we were very efficient. Our first set side-out percentage was at 93%. We were in the high 80’s most of the second set until the end when we ended at 75%. I would have to guess we were around 80% until that UCF run that closed the gap a little bit and made the game look closer than it really was. Thankfully we had a double-digit lead when they went on that run, because it could have been a little more nerve-wracking than it ended up being. I am really proud of Ronaldo and Kyle, my assistants, for the game plan they put together for today and their tireless effort all season. When you get to the end and win championships, there are just so many people that play a really big role. The whole Tulsa community, from our administration on down, has helped run this tournament really well. Our team was blessed to have this opportunity here and to win the tournament they way we did. It is not too often that there is a championship match that your heart rate doesn’t get up too high. These ladies made it possible to win with a little bit of ease.”

On winning the championship in the Reynolds Center…

“It is a big reason we won today. We won the regular season, however when we played in the Reynolds Center, we only lost two sets all conference season. The whole month of October we only got to have three home matches. Both of our conference losses came during long road streaks. So it was nice getting these girls back home and to let them sleep in their own beds. It definitely felt great this weekend. The girls rose to the challenge of playing at home, and our crowd really helped them out.”

On playing a team that beat Tulsa earlier in the season…

“It definitely helped. It is sad that this is the last time we will get to play them. They’re heading off to the Big East next season. We were excited to beat them. One of the things we talked about when UCF won last night was the revenge factor. They are only one of two teams that we could say that about this year, and only one of three over the last two years. We used it as motivation. If we needed a bit of edge to get up, that was the motivation.”

Tulsa Senior Jessica Adams

On the team’s ability to stay calm on the last point of the match…

“We played really well as a team at the end. We were a little shaken up because UCF did go on a little bit of a run there at the end. We just came together and said it was time to get the job done. So that is what we did.”

On playing the season with a target on the team’s back…

“We’ve been playing with a target on our back for a few years now. I think it is actually fun. I like more pressure packed situations. The team does as well. We did lose twice in conference, but it helped us build character and made us work even harder.”

On the non-conference schedule…

“We had a very tough pre-season, and some of the games did not end up the way we wanted them to end, but they built us up mentally and physically and made us stronger for the conference season.”

Tulsa Senior Tyler Henderson

On going to the NCAA Tournament…

“It is really exciting. We are looking forward to finding out where we get to play this week or next week. I am just excited to go even farther in the tournament this year.”

On playing with Jessica Adams (a teammate since high school at Heritage Hall):

“It is nice winning with Jess. I have always won my championships with her. We are like a family out there. I am really just happy we got to win one last time.”

UCF Head Coach Todd Dagenais:

Opening Statement…

“I think that, first of all, we got beat. I think we got beat and we got beat by a better team today. You look at the numbers that they put up offensively and they don’t really ‘wow’ you. They were very consistent. I really feel like the number of errors that we had in several facets of the game cost us any opportunity to run with them as they were being consistent. I’ve said from the very beginning when I voted Tulsa number 1 (in the preseason poll) that I felt like with the returning core group that they had that 16-0 and a conference run was in the cards for them. I was really surprised that they dropped two matches this year, but they continued to get better. Where we went wrong was in our first ball kill phase of the game. They immediately transitioned against us and scored quickly and we lost a lot of the longer rallies. Those two things really spell doom when you’re trying to run against a sprinter and that’s what Tulsa is. There are parts of me that are very sad that we didn’t put our best efforts on the floor like we felt we could have. I’m not sure that even our best effort could have beat them today, it might have. It certainly could have helped us extend the match, but we didn’t put it out there today. I feel bad for our team. I know how bad they wanted it and how hard they prepared for it and more importantly I want them to see the big picture of who and what we were at the end of September and who and what we are at the end of November. Five years ago we were at the bottom of the league and now we’re playing for a conference championship. I’m proud of where we are. I think we got beat by a better team. We certainly wish Tulsa the best. They had an outside hitter that did what an outside hitter should do in a championship match. She makes you look really good as a coach and as a team. She’s a phenomenal player; a player that any coach wished they had on their team. When Tulsa has had bad days somehow Tyler Henderson has found a way to make sure they had a good day.”

On remaining on the floor as Tulsa was presented their C-USA trophy…

“That has nothing to do with our character, that’s who UCF is. That’s who UCF athletics is. That’s how we conduct our business. It’s not only a volleyball thing but also a softball and soccer and football and basketball thing. I hope that programs other than our school take notice of that. We’re there to honor the champions. That’s just who we are and who my programs always will be. Thank you for noticing that.”
