Tulsa, Okla. - Eleven players, including six freshman opened practice with hopes of a title defense, as The University of Tulsa volleyball team started preseason drills. TU returns a pair of starters in Conference USA Setter of the Year Julia Silva and second-team All-C-USA selection Fabiola Nepomuceno. Also returning for another tour with the Hurricane are defensive specialists Kelsey Wood and Malorey Grove, along with middle hitter Renee Brooks.

"We are a young squad," said TU Head Coach Ed Allen. "We are still adjusting and learning a system that mightbe a lot different than what the younger players are used to playing. Our returning players are in very good condition, which has allowed us to practice at a much more aggressive pace. That, combined with the heat this week will really help the freshman as well as the whole team in conditioning for the season."

The six newcomers adjusting to the faster paced college game are Jessie Ayers, Nicole Boyle, Emma Ridley, Michelle Solomon, Hannah Stout and Shaylin Werner. Ayers is a setter, while Boyle Ridley and Solomon are outside hitters. Stout and Werner play in the middle of the front line.

Tulsa is coming off its best conference season in program history. The Golden Hurricane finished 27-7 overall in 2006, including a school-record 13-3 during Conference USA play. TU won the regular season C-USA crown, before falling in the semi-finals of the conference championships.

The Golden Hurricane was picked to finish tied for fifth-place in the C-USA standings by the league's coaches in their preseason poll. Silva was also selected to the Preseason All-C-USA First team, as voted by the C-USA coaching staffs.

Tulsa opens the 2007 season on August 24th at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational hosted by Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. The Hurricane opens its home schedule by hosting the Tulsa Invitational on Sept. 14-15.
