TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team held its annual Blue and Gold scrimmage Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, as it prepares for its 2013 season opener next weekend.

The Golden Hurricane held a four-set split squad scrimmage, playing the first three sets to 25 points and the fourth set to 15 points. Each side won two sets apiece, as Gold won the first and third sets, 25-19 and 25-16, while Blue won the second and fourth sets, 25-16 and 15-10.

"The number one thing is that we came out of it injury free," Tulsa head coach Steven McRoberts said. "I felt like we did a lot of good things today. We had some different players step up in different way.

"Anytime you split up your squad in half, some players are playing some different positions that they might not always do."

Sophomore Paige Panfil led all players with 15 kills and tallied a double-double with 11 digs for the Gold team, coached by TU assistant Kyle Gamble. Junior outside hitter Valerie El Houssine added 13 kills and 13 digs, and freshman outside hitter Erica Bohannon had 10 kills for the Gold side. Gold freshman setter Genesis Viera posted a double-double with 37 assists and 28 digs. Freshman libero Brooke Berryhill led Gold with 19 digs.

Senior outside hitter Kellie Culbertson posted 13 kills and 14 digs, junior setter Bailey Clampitt tallied 30 assists and 26 digs to nab double-doubles for the Blue, coached by TU assistant Ronaldo Pacheco. Sophomore middle blocker Nicole Newton added 10 kills and sophomore defensive specialist Kelsey Parks had 11 digs for Blue.

Over the past two seasons, TU has had 12 new players, including six this offseason.

"We're going to have three freshmen in the mix and a transfer that is going to be in the rotation," McRoberts said. "It's going to take a lot of game play for them to get comfortable with the system. You can only simulate so much in a practice."

The Golden Hurricane opens the 2013 season next weekend, Aug. 30-31 at the Dayton Invitational in Dayton, Ohio. TU opens the tournament against the host No. 22 Flyers on Friday at 6 p.m. The Hurricane finishes up the tournament against Missouri State at 9 a.m. and Northeastern at 4:30 p.m.

Tulsa opens the home campaign on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in Donald W. Reynolds.
