Aug. 27, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball senior duo of Tyler Henderson and Jessica Adams were named Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday.
For Henderson, this marks the 15th time during her career she has won the award, while Adams has taken home the league's weekly defensive honor nine times. "We're very proud for how these two players played over the weekend," commented Head Coach Steven McRoberts. "Considering the competition that we played I felt like they were very deserving of this honor."
Henderson, the 2010 and 2011 C-USA Player of the Year, started her season off with a bang as she tallied 28 kills in 43 attempts to attain an attack percentage of .558 against Western Michigan to propel TU to a straight set victory. After collecting 17 kills against Missouri State, Henderson collected 29 kills against Oklahoma while adding eight digs and two service aces. She was named to the Nike Invitational All-Tournament squad, and averaged 6.73 kills per set, which is almost 2.5 kills more than anyone else in the league. Henderson also averaged 7.09 points per set during the invitational which featured four 2011 NCAA Tournament participants.
"Tyler had an incredible offensive weekend averaging almost seven kills a game against three teams that were NCAA Tournament type times," McRoberts said. She also hit for a high percentage, which is an incredible feat. Furthermore, she flirted with the 30-kill mark in a three set match (against Western Michigan) and a five set match at Oklahoma, and those two games were big time efforts on her part."
Adams joined Henderson on the Nike Invitational All-Tournament squad as she averaged 5.27 digs during the invite, which ranks second in the league. Her passing led the Hurricane to a .233 hitting percentage, which is tops in C-USA. She tallied 17 digs during a sweep of Western Michigan and 16 in a straight-set victory over Missouri State before a 25-dig performance against Oklahoma.
"Jessica had a lot of big plays for us this weekend," McRoberts stated. "She was very steady for us on our serve-receive as we were only aced five times, and she passed for a high percentage. She made a lot of hustle plays and picked up some big digs for us in crucial times in all three matches and also got her senior year off to a good start."
A Tuesday night tilt against Arkansas at 7 p.m. awaits the Hurricane at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. The team will then hit the road to Lawrence, Kan., to partake in the Kansas Invitational as TU faces Arkansas State and Kansas on Friday before playing Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday.
