The University of Tulsa volleyball team started the 2000 season off with a bang, by winning the MSU Boomerang's-Ramada Inn Classic held at Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky. While winning all three contests the Golden Hurricane set new school marks for team kills in a match (99), attacks in a match (250), assists in a match (87), individual kills for a match (38), individual attacks for a match (88) and individual assists for a match (77).

Senior outside hitter Kristien Van Lierop was TU's big gun from the outside, recording 55 kills in only nine games for an average of 6.11 kills per game. With only seven hitting errors in her 118 attempts, she finished the tournament with a .407 hitting percentage.

In its first match of the season, TU defeated Chicago State in three games (15-6, 15-4, 15-8). Junior Ashley Frogge' led the Hurricane with 14 kills, while senior setter Shannon Smith added 32 assists. The Hurricane's .411 hitting percentage was the third best in school history for a single match.

The second match was early on Saturday morning against Gardner-Webb. Tulsa won in three games (15-7, 15-1, 15-10). Sophomore Tammy Leuer led the Hurricane with nine kills and a career-high .571 hitting percentage. Smith and junior LeeAnn McLaughlin split time at setter earning 15 and 16 assists, respectively.

In the championship match, Tulsa face the host-Morehead State. The Eagles did record 114 kills in the five games, but the Hurricane were able to win the match in five games (9-15, 15-12, 15-10, 13-15, 16-14). Six school records fell in this match, as Van Lierop and Smith teamed to break three of those records. Van Lierop raised the bar for kills in a match, breaking her own record with 38 kills. Her 88 attacks also broke a school record, held by Michelle Marcoux since 1990. Smith added 77 assists, which broke the old mark by 19. She had tied the old mark twice last season.

Van Lierop, Smith and Frogge' were all named to the All-Tournament team.

The Hurricane will travel to Green Bay, Wisc. for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament on September 8-9.
