Volleyball Team Wins two More On First Day of Dr. Cairns Classic

The Golden Hurricane Volleyball team extened its current win streak to eight matches, with a pair of victories at the Dr. Tom Cairns Golden Hurricane Classic held at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Friday night.
TU defeated the North Texas Lady Eagles in its first match of the day, 15-11, 15-2, 15-10. Senior outside hitter Kristien Van Lierop led the charge with 15 kills, while fellow outside hitter sophomore Tammy Leuer finished with a .348 hitting percentage and 11 kills.
Senior setter Shannon Smith finished 36 assists as well as three kills on nine attempts.
The win raised TU's record to 7-0 on the year, with one more match on the day. UNT's record fell to 3-5, with two more matches on Saturday.
Many of the underclassmen were able to see action in the second match of the day as the Golden Hurricane outscored the Grambling State Lady Tigers, 45-7. TU played its starters for the only part of the first game, of the 15-2, 15-4, 15-1 three-game match.
Sophomore outside hitter Amber Martin turned in a career-high .533 hitting percentage with 10 kills in the win. Junior setter LeeAnn McLaughlin added 24 assists, while fellow junior Kara Hidinger recorded a match-high seven digs.
Tulsa will finish the classic on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match against Centenary College and a 7:30 p.m. match with Louisiana Tech.
