Oct. 7, 2011
TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa volleyball team closes its five-match Conference USA homestand with a weekend set against Conference USA foe Southern Miss Saturday and Sunday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Golden Hurricane (13-5, 4-1 C-USA) will attempt to bounce back from its first league loss of the season when it plays the Golden Eagles (7-9, 1-3 C-USA) Saturday and Sunday, both at 1 p.m. Live stats via Gametracker and live video via Hurricane Vision will be available at www.TulsaHurricane.com. Saturday's match will also be broadcast in Tulsa on 88.7 FM HD3 KWTU.
"We've had a couple of really good practices," Tulsa Head Coach Steven McRoberts said. "The players really have come together over the last couple of days. I feel like we have a refocus that we haven't had in a while. Of course, any time you've had a lot of success that these players have, it's easy to get comfortable. Losing the match to SMU, and even the way that we did it, really got these players back on the same page, and we've had a couple of really good days to show for that."
Tulsa is hitting .255 as a team (949-337-2402) with 949 kills (14.38 k/s), 889 assists (13.47 a/s), 90 service aces (1.36 sa/s), 1,018 digs (15.42 dig/s) and 81.0 blocks (1.23 blk/s). Hurricane opponents are hitting .217 (812-318-2280) with 812 kills (12.30 k/s), 768 assists (11.64 a/s), 50 aces (0.76 sa/s), 976 digs (14.79 dig/s), and 135.5 total blocks (2.05 blk/s).
Tulsa is led on the outside by junior Tyler Henderson, who has 319 kills (4.83 kills per set), a .350 attack percentage and 342.0 points for the Hurricane. Junior Diana Silva has 177 kills (3.11 k/s), 16 aces and 172 digs (3.02 dig/s). Sophomore Kellie Culbertson has 144 kills (2.22 dig/s), 15 aces and 195 digs (3.00 dig/s). Senior Kelsey Hancock has 118 kills (1.82 k/s) for TU.
Junior libero Jessica Adams leads Tulsa with 312 digs (4.73 dig/s) and has 17 service aces. Junior setter Jordan Clampitt has 553 assists (8.64 a/s) and 119 digs (1.86 dig/s). Freshman Bailey Clampitt has 231 assists (5.13 a/s) and 55 digs (1.22 dig/s).
Southern Miss hits .169 as a team (766-380-2283) with 766 kills (12.77 k/s), 729 assists (12.15 a/s), 53 service aces (0.88 sa/s), 1,074 digs (17.90 dig/s) and 118.5 blocks (1.98 blk/s). The Golden Eagles' opponents are hitting .167 (700-324-2253) with 700 kills (11.67 k/s), 639 assists (10.65 a/s), 43 aces (0.72 sa/s), 984 digs (16.40 dig/s), and 160.5 total blocks (2.67 blk/s).
"(Southern Miss) has a very good setter," Mc Roberts said. "She likes to throw the ball around a lot. She likes to be an offensive presence. That's not something we've seen a lot of this year. She distributes the ball really well and makes the hitters better. I've seen them have their ups and downs, just like all the teams in our conference have. They've played some good matches and lost, struggled at times and lost, and played really well. They hit over .400 vs. Memphis, and Memphis right now is in the top half of the conference. We're expecting them to come in here and play hard just like everybody has. Again, we know we have a big target on our back, but I feel like our team has refocused since our loss. We're not going to lose because of a lack of effort. I think the players are ready to get back out and play a competition match again."
Tulsa and Southern Miss have played six times. TU leads the series, 4-2. The Golden Hurricane has won four of the last five meetings since 2006, including a 3-0 victory last season in Hattiesburg. TU also won in 2006 (3-0), 2007 (3-0) and 2008 (3-1). The Golden Eagles defeated the Hurricane, 3-2, in 2009 in Hattiesburg. USM also won 3-1 in 1999.
