Tulsa Volleyball Signs Three For 2013 Season
Dec. 12, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team signed three high school student-athletes for the 2013 season during the early signing period.
The Golden Hurricane inked outside hitter Erica Bohannon, setter Genesis Viera and libero Brooke Berryhill, all who are expected to help fill the void of the departing senior class, which has won three Conference USA regular season titles and has accumulated 111 wins during their careers.
"We are very excited about this group," commented Head Coach Steven McRoberts. "We feel like they are going to be able to come in and compete for spots right away. It is a very talented group."
Bohannon, a native of Coppell, Texas, led Coppell High School to the 5A Texas state championship and was named MVP of the championship match. In the championship tilt, Bohannon recorded 21 kills, seven assists, eight digs, four service aces and two blocks as Coppell defeated New Braunfels in five sets. The Cowgirls finished the year ranked ninth nationally with a 49-3 record. Bohannon was a finalist for Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, which was awarded to her teammate Chiaka Ogbogu.
"Erica is a good all around player, as far as six rotations. Her high school team has won the past two 5A Texas state championships, so she will bring a winning attitude to the team. At 6-2, Erica brings some needed height to our team and she can really pound the ball. We are excited about her coming in and getting in the mix with the girls that we already have in our program."
Berryhill, a native of Haslet, Texas, is the Northwest High School career dig leader with 2,707 and service aces leader with 172. She was named the Defensive Player of the Year three times in Wise County, and was a First-team All-District player three times. Berryhill showed her versatility this year by moving to outside hitter as after playing her first three years as a libero.
"We liked her from the very beginning as far as seeing her athleticism, her ball control, her defense and her volleyball IQ," McRoberts said. "I think she is someone that will come in and compete for the libero spot next year. With Jessica Adams graduating, that will leave a big hole, and we are going to need someone that will bring close to what Jess brought to the team. It's going to be tough, but when looking at Brooke we think she could be that person in the near future."
Viera, a native of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, was the 2010 and 2011 Bright House Network Player of the Year in Orlando, Fla. A four-year letterwinner at Harmony High School, She led the Longhorns to four state quarterfinal appearances, including a semifinal appearance in 2011. During her four years, she collected 2,117 assists, 317 kills, 218 aces, 183 blocks and 409 digs. She was named to the All Central Florida Second Team in 2011, where she recorded 557 assists, 85 kills, 65 aces, 36 blocks and 74 digs.
"Genesis is a great setter," McRoberts stated. "She had some offers from bigger schools early. She wasn't ready to make a decision, and that was lucky for us, as we were able to get her on a visit and she fell in love with Tulsa. We are excited about her coming in and competing with Bailey Clampitt for the setter position next year. She is someone that has played on high level club teams, and we feel like she is going to be someone that is going to leave her mark on the program."
"Overall, this is very good set of three recruits for us, as far as looking to try to replace the five seniors that are leaving," McRoberts said. "I think ability wise they will be in the ballpark with the graduating senior class. The only thing they don't have is the experience, but once they get here we will start to see some great things from each of them."
