Tulsa scored 31 unanswered points across five scoring drives from the second quarter through the fourth quarter.
Baylor Hayes completed 20 of 27 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Oran Singleton Jr. caught seven passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Trequan Jones rushed 12 times for 77 yards and a touchdown. Kyran Duhon recorded a pair of sacks, while Tyson Williams led the team with 12 tackles, a career-high.
Rice opened the first quarter with a 75-yard scoring drive, using Tyvonn Byars and Jacurri Brown on the ground before Brown broke a 50-yard touchdown run putting the Owls ahead 7-0.
With the Golden Hurricane facing a third and 20, Hayes converted with a 33-yard pass to Singleton, then added completions to Javon Ross and Singleton as Tulsa drove down to the 1-yard-line. The drive ended on downs when Dexter Williams II was stopped on a QB sneak.
After Rice added a 32-yard Tommy Bauchiero field goal making it 10-0, Tulsa got the offense going on a drive that included Hayes' 35-yard fourth-down completion to David Wells Jr. before Damari Alston scored from 4 yards out.
Rice pushed the margin back to 17-7 on Jacurri Brown's 78-yard touchdown run. Tulsa later closed the gap again when Hayes found Ross for an 11-yard touchdown at 2:48. Tulsa's defense produced the late swing when Devin Robinson sacked Brown and forced a fumble, with Hudson Ball recovering and returning it 14 yards to the 5. Three plays later, Hayes hit Singleton for an 8-yard touchdown and Tulsa took a 21-17 lead into halftime.
Out of the half, Hayes moved Tulsa with completions to Singleton and Jones, a Rice pass interference penalty pushed the drive to the 22, and Owen Carey made a 35-yard field goal putting Tulsa ahead 24-17.
Rice answered with a 12-play, 55-yard drive built on the ground, including conversions on third-and-2 and third-and-9, but Kyran Duhon's sack helped stall it before a 46-yard field goal try missed.
Tulsa opened the fourth quarter with a 72-yard drive, converting third downs on Hayes' 26-yard completion to Alston and a later 4-yard rush before Hayes found Sevion Morrison for a 6-yard touchdown extending the lead to 30-17.
Rice moved across midfield on the next possession and converted one fourth down, but Tulsa forced an incompletion on fourth-and-5 for the turnover on downs.
Alston helped move the next drive into Rice territory before Jones broke a 45-yard touchdown run and Hayes ran in a 2-point conversion to push Tulsa's lead to 38-17, which would hold for the final score.
Tulsa hosts Army at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
