Tulsa Falls to Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane came up short on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated by Navy, 34-26.
Baylor Hayes completed 20 of 35 passes for 268 yards and one touchdown and added 14 rushing yards. Javon Ross caught seven passes for 90 yards and rushed for 36 yards on two carries. Oran Singleton finished with five receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown and completed a pass for a 10-yard touchdown. Dax Collins recorded 13 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
Tough loss. It is hard to win on the road in this conference, remarked head coach Tre Lamb. There are a lot of one-score games. We couldn't stop them. I think they had 389 yards rushing. You are not going to beat anybody doing that. The two biggest differences in this game were that we couldn't run the ball and they [Navy] could. We tried to keep running the ball and had a lot of carries, but the yards were not there.
Navy turned its opening possession into a 7-0 lead when Jackson Gutierrez broke a 56-yard touchdown run. Tulsa responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that included Hayes' 39-yard completion to Ross and ended with Sevion Morrison's 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down tying the game at 7-7.
After a defensive stop by Tulsa on fourth-and-1, the Golden Hurricane took over. TU's offense converted its own fourth down when Hayes found David Wells Jr. for 5 yards before Singleton hit Wells for a 10-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead. Later in the quarter, Devin Robinson recovered a Navy fumble at the Navy 28 in the final minute, and Tulsa led 14-7 after one.
Owen Carey opened the second quarter scoring with a 30-yard field goal, putting Tulsa ahead 17-7 after the offense began the quarter in the red zone. Navy moved deep into Tulsa territory on the next possession, but Rylan Leathers forced a Gutierrez fumble and Dedaunte Scott recovered it for Tulsa. Tulsa later came up with another red-zone takeaway when Collins forced and recovered a Michael Barrow fumble at the 6. Hayes helped Tulsa turn the second turnover into points, hitting Wells Jr. for 53 yards and Ross for 23 more before Carey made a 24-yard field goal extending the lead to 20-7. Navy answered in the final minute with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Gutierrez to Truman Brasfield, leaving Tulsa ahead 20-14 at halftime.
Tulsa opened the third quarter with a 75-yard drive, converting twice on third down before Hayes found Singleton for a 3-yard touchdown that extended the lead to 26-14. Navy responded with a 75-yard march built largely on the run, adding a 17-yard Gutierrez completion to Vic Listorti before Charles Robinson scored from seven yards to make it 26-20 after the missed extra point. Tulsa moved back into Navy territory on Hayes' 40-yard completion to Singleton, but Carey's 47-yard field-goal attempt was no good on the ensuing possession. Navy crossed midfield on Barrow's 21-yard run before Tyson Williams intercepted Gutierrez inside the red-zone, and the quarter ended with Tulsa still in front, 26-20.
Navy took possession into the fourth quarter and moved from its 43, converting fourth-and-1 near midfield and two third downs before Gutierrez scored on a 4-yard run putting Navy ahead 27-26. Tulsa's next drive stalled after a false start and an incompletion on third-and-10. Navy took over at its 18 after Max Tulen's punt and put together a 13-play, 82-yard drive, with Gutierrez scoring again on a 3-yard run at 1:10 to make it 34-26. Hayes hit Singleton for 29 yards on Tulsa's final possession, but the drive ended on downs at the Navy 47, and Navy kneeled out the 34-26 final.
Up next, Tulsa football team travels to Houston, Texas, to face Rice on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 3:30 p.m.
