HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Tulsa defeated Sam Houston 23-17 on Saturday. Tulsa ran for 241 yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by Trequan Jones' 81-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Jones rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Dax Collins finished with a team-high 12 tackles. Kyran Duhon recorded three tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Thomas Davis added four tackles and two sacks.

This victory marked the first 2-0 start for Tulsa since 2015.

Sam Houston produced the first scoring drive, moving 75 yards and taking a 7-0 lead when Landyn Locke found Chris Reed for a 39-yard touchdown at 12:02 before Samuel Carpenter added the extra point.

Baylor Hayes hit Oran Singleton Jr. for 21 yards to the Sam Houston 5 early in the second quarter, and Jones finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Tulsa's defense stopped the next Sam Houston series after Will Upshaw sacked Landyn Locke for a 12-yard loss, but after a Tulsa punt pinned Sam Houston at its 6, Locke connected with Jerrian Parker for a 94-yard touchdown and a 14-7 Sam Houston lead.

Tulsa came back with an 11-play drive aided by Sam Houston penalties, reaching the Sam Houston 23 before Owen Carey made a 41-yard field goal at 2:12 to cut the deficit to 14-10. Tulsa trailed at halftime by a score of 14-10.

Tulsa opened the third quarter with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that included a fourth-down conversion by Alston and ended when Tristan Lawyer ran 56 yards for a touchdown on a fake punt putting Tulsa in front 16-14.

The defense got the ball back after Sam Houston picked up one first down, with Arias Nash breaking up a pass and Devin Robinson and Caldra Williford stopping Alton McCaskill for a loss before a punt.

Tulsa needed only two plays on the next possession, as Alston gained 8 yards and Jones broke an 81-yard touchdown run making it 23-14.

Sam Houston answered with a 13-play drive that ended in Samuel Carpenter's 39-yard field goal at 1:02, and Tulsa carried a 23-17 lead into the fourth quarter after a late holding penalty wiped out a deep completion.

Tulsa punted to open the fourth quarter, but the defense stopped Sam Houston's first possession after Landyn Locke's 36-yard completion to Chris Reed moved the ball to the Tulsa 35, with Davis recording an 11-yard sack on fourth-and-9.

The offense took over at its 45 and moved into Sam Houston territory behind consecutive Alston runs and a fourth-and-4 conversion by Dexter Williams II, but the drive ended on downs at the Sam Houston 33. Sam Houston then put together a 17-play, 48-yard drive that reached the Tulsa 5 after a penalty, but Tulsa forced three straight incompletions before Duhon sacked Locke on fourth down and Jaylen George recovered the fumble at the Tulsa 19. Baylor Hayes kneeled out the remaining clock, closing Tulsa's 23-17 win.

Tulsa hosts East Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, at H.A. Chapman Stadium for Senior Day.
