Alexis Gaulden scored a career-high 23 points to give Tulsa a 70-64 win over Saint Louis on Thursday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. TU moved to 4-7 on the season, while SLU fell to 7-3 overall.
"That's what we like about our team, we have a lot of different individuals that can step and do that kind of thing," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I am really excited for our team. This was a really good opponent, a team we've struggled with the last couple of years, and we've seen some leads disappear this year, so once we got the lead tonight we were able to hang on to it. I hope this helps our confidence and growth of our team."
Gaulden's 23 points included five-made three-pointers, while she shot 9-of-11 from the field. Erika Wakefield added nine points, Shug Dickson scored eight and Kendrian Elliott added seven. Elliott also had a team-best six rebounds.
Gaulden was the Hurricane's third shooter to score 20+ points in as many games as Ebony Parker scored 20 points against #19/20 Oklahoma and Elliott had 20 points against Arkansas State.
TU had a 5-4 lead in steals, while SLU had a 46-33 advantage in rebounds and a 3-2 lead in blocks, while both teams had 12 assists.
Tulsa shot 43-percent from the field, including 42-percent from three-point range, and were 7-of-14 from the charity stripe, while Saint Louis shot 39-percent from the field, 26-percent from behind the arc and were 11-of-16 from the free throw line.
Tulsa and Saint Louis matched each other pretty much point-for-point to start the game, as there were three tied scores in the first five minutes, including a 9-9 score at the 4:55 mark. Saint Louis inched ahead in the remainder of the quarter to take a seven-point advantage with 1:18 left to play, but a jumper by Tatyana Perez made the score 18-13 at the end of the frame.
Tulsa came back in the second period to outscore Saint Louis, 18-9, to take a 31-27 advantage into halftime. TU would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the contest.
TU climbed to an 11-point lead, 43-32, with 5:05 on the clock in the third frame, but SLU battled back to cut their deficit to just three points (44-41) at the 1:57 mark. Tulsa inched back ahead to finish the quarter with an eight-point lead, 53-45.
Saint Louis battled back and pulled to within four (59-55) with 4:42 on the clock in the fourth quarter, and then on a pair of made free throws by Sadie Stipanovich at the 3:55 mark, closed the gap to just two points.
Kendrian Elliott scored a layup, was fouled and made the free throw to make it a five-point game (62-57) with 2:28 on the clock. The Billikens cut the lead to just three points two more times, but TU again climbed to an eight-point advantage (69-61) with 14-second remaining and finished with the six-point victory.
Jackie Kemph had a team-best 18 points, while Sadie Stipanovich scored a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, December 18 against Little Rock. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Reynolds Center.
