Seniors Kelsee Grovey and Ashley Clark, and sophomore Erika Wakefield all scored in double figures to lead sixth-seeded Tulsa to a 76-38 win over 11th-seeded Houston in the American Athletic Conference Championship First Round on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. TU moved to 12-18 on the season, while UH concluded their season with a 6-24 overall mark.
"I am really proud of the fight in our team and how well we played together," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We shared the ball really well. We aren't a good rebounding team and we rebounded them by 11 tonight. We also wanted to limit their second-chance points and we held that number to nine. We outscored them in the paint, we outscored them off turnovers and we outscored them in second-chance points."
Grovey had a team-leading 17 points, followed by Clark's 16 points and Wakefield's 10 points. Clark also had 11 rebounds for her 14th career double-double. Jordyn Holmes added nine points, Te'era Williams eight, and both Ashley Hughes and Liesl Spoerl totaled six points.
Tulsa had a 42-31 lead in rebounds, a 13-2 advantage in assists and a 12-4 lead in steals, while Houston had a 2-1 edge in blocks. The Cougars turned the ball over 24 times, while the Hurricane had 14.
TU shot 44-percent from the field, including 33-percent from three-point range, and 72-percent from the charity stripe, while UH shot 26-percent from the field, 18-percent from behind the arc and 66-percent from the free throw line.
There were two tied scores and four lead changes in the first 4:23 off the clock, including an 8-8 score at 5:37, but a layup by Clark gave TU the lead for the remainder of the game and the Golden Hurricane took a 17-14 lead at the end of the frame.
Tulsa outscored the Cougars, 13-6, in the second quarter and had a 30-20 lead at halftime. TU shot 37-percent and UH shot 38-percent from the field, and both teams had 16 rebounds, but it was the 14 turnovers and just one steal by Houston, compared to Tulsa's seven turnovers and six steals that made the difference in the first half.
The Golden Hurricane climbed to a 17-point lead, 51-34, with 12-seconds left in the third period and had a 51-35 lead at the break. TU hit 8-of-16 field goals for 50-percent in the third frame, while UH was just 5-of-15 for 33-percent.
In the final 10-minute period, Tulsa outscored Houston, 25-3, and climbed to a game-high 38-point advantage as time expired.
Houston was led by Serithia Hawkins with nine points and 11 rebounds, while Marche' Amerson added eight points.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, March 5 against third-seeded Temple. Game time is set for 7:00 pm Central at the Mohegan Sun Arena and can be watched live on ESPN3.
